has been a full time Edinburgh GP since 1980, and is Senior Lecturer and Reader in the Department of Community Health Sciences at Edinburgh University. With an interest in illegal drug use for over 25 years, he identified the UK’s first HIV outbreak in people injecting drugs and has led numerous projects and publications while coordinating treatment for a large caseload of injectors and their families. Research findings have included significant HIV data and heterosexual transmission studies, deaths in drug users, hepatitis C prevalence and sexual transmission studies and treatment trials. Roy was a member of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs for 10 years. Current interests include Asian epidemics of HIV in injecting drug users, and the damaging effects of cannabis.
